What you need to know before your procedure
Whether you are having your procedure at the Endoscopy Center or at the Hospital, we want this to be as pleasant and hassle-free of an experience as possible. Below are some basic points to be aware of in advance of your procedure.
1) You should plan on receiving anesthesia for the exam, and need to make sure you have someone with you to give you a ride home. Most patients are awake and back to being themselves within moments of the exam completion, but you might be a little tired or have subtle slowed reflexes for a little while and we want to make sure that you get home safe and sound.
2) If you are taking any blood thinning medications, make sure your doctor knows about them and has given you instructions regarding when (and if) you should stop taking the medications before the procedure.
3) You should have received preparation instructions when your procedure was scheduled, and prescriptions may have been sent to the pharmacy. A week before the exam is a good time to go over the instructions, make sure they are clear and you understand them, and have picked up any prescriptions. If you cannot locate the instructions, please give the office a call, or you can download many of the instructions here
4) For a colonoscopy in particular, often the hardest part of the procedure is the day before, when you are on a restricted diet and are taking medication to promote multiple bowel movements. Just try to keep in mind that it's all going to be worth it! A clean colon is a necessary prerequisite for getting the best exam possible.
5) If at any point in time you are unsure of what you need to be doing, what medicines you should or should not take, where to go, or have any questions regarding the procedure itself, please don't hesitate to reach out to the office.
